What is One Piece?

One Piece is a popular Japanese manga series created by Eiichiro Oda. It has been continuously published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 1997, and as of July 2023, it has been compiled into 106 volumes. The series follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they navigate the Grand Line searching for the legendary treasure known as “One Piece,” to make Luffy the next Pirate King.

The manga’s popularity led to its adaptation into various media, including a festival film by Production I.G. and an anime series by Toei Animation, which premiered in 1999. Toei Animation has produced 13 TV specials, one original video animation, and 14 animated feature films. The franchise has expanded into multiple forms of media and merchandise, such as a trading card game and numerous video games. Viz Media and Madman Entertainment have licensed the manga for English publication in North America, the UK, and Australia. The anime series was initially licensed by 4Kids Entertainment for English release in North America in 2004 before Funimation took over in 2007.

Who is Monkey D. Luffy?

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. Inspired by his hero and mentor, Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy dreams of becoming a pirate. At 17, he sets out from the East Blue Sea to the Grand Line, seeking the fabled One Piece treasure to succeed Gol D. Roger as the “King of the Pirates.”

What Does One Piece Look Like?

The quest for the One Piece treasure is the central theme of the series. Years before the current storyline, Gol D. Roger, along with his right-hand man Silvers Rayleigh and their crew, achieved the remarkable feat of finding this treasure.

Roger was fascinated by tales of a treasure hidden on an island near the end of the Grand Line. After an incredible journey, his crew became the only ones to reach this final island. To get there, they had to find special Poneglyphs—large stone tablets inscribed with historical knowledge. These poneglyphs are scattered worldwide, and only a few people can read them. Among the three types, the “Road” poneglyphs provide a map of the treasure’s location.

There are four Road Poneglyphs, each indicating a specific location. By combining these locations, one can determine the final island’s position. Roger convinced his rival Whitebeard to lend him Oden Kozuki, a crew member who could read the poneglyphs.

With Oden’s help, the Roger Pirates discovered the legendary island. There, they uncovered the truth about the Void Century, the Will of D., and the Ancient Weapons, among other significant global secrets.
